Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery

The region's leader in advanced surgical technology

Smaller incisions and less scarring. Faster recovery. Less blood loss. Shorter hospital stay. Reduced pain. With benefits like these, minimally invasive (MI) surgery has become the preferred approach for treating a growing number of conditions that require surgery.

Successful MI surgery is about more than just surgical technique. For patients to have consistently excellent outcomes, it takes a combination of surgical expertise honed by extensive experience, the availability of the most advanced technology, and an unwavering commitment to quality among all the disciplines involved in a patient's care. That's exactly what you'll find at Lowell General Hospital's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery techniques are often used for General Surgery, Urology, Bariatric (weight loss), Cancer, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) procedures. These techniques use fewer or smaller incisions and the surgeon works through small tubes inside the body. Types of minimally invasive procedures include laparoscopic, endoscopic, robot-assisted, keyhole (using a single incision in the navel) and arthroscopic surgery.

Eric Stein, MDLowell General has invested in state-of-the-art technology to support its Minimally Invasive Surgery program. This includes the industry-leading da Vinci® robotic surgical system, the innovative BrainLab CT imaging system for ENT and neurosurgery, and an advanced anesthesiology system that integrates drug delivery, monitoring and reporting for optimal patient safety. Plus, the hospital's integrated surgical suites are among the best operating rooms in the state – and the most technologically advanced, putting control of all the OR's functional systems at the surgeon's fingertips.

Equally important is the expertise of the hospital's board-certified surgeons, many of whom are fellowship-trained innovators in their respective specialties. They not only have amassed tremendous experience but also train other surgeons in minimally invasive techniques. And they are supported by specialized surgical nursing teams who are the most experienced in the region.

"Most surgical cases completed at Lowell General today are minimally invasive procedures. This type of surgery has excellent outcomes — typically decreasing post-operative discomfort as well as helping to speed along healing. Many of these operations can be done as day surgery or with just an overnight stay." Patrick Canal, Director of Surgical Services

Don't just take our word for it. Lowell General is designated a Level IA Accredited Bariatric Center by the American College of Surgeons – a testament to the quality of our care – and we are designated a Magnet™ hospital, the highest honor a hospital can receive for its nursing care.

Finally, our collaborative approach is a big part of what makes our care exceptional. From working with your primary care physician to identify the most appropriate surgeon for your particular needs, through careful follow-up after surgery, everyone involved in your care works together to ensure the best-possible results, every step of the way.
