Interpreting Your BMI

BMI Weight Category
Under 18.5 Underweight
18.5- 24.9 Normal
25 - 29.9 Overweight
30 - 34.9 Obese
35 - 39.9 Clinically Obese
40 or greater Morbidly Obese

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a general indicator of whether or not you are maintaining a healthy weight based on the ratio of your weight to your height. It’s an imperfect scale as it doesn't account for differences in body types. For example, a 5 foot 9 inch bodybuilder who weighs 215 pounds and has a 6% body fat would be labeled obese. And there is already a new scale just for people from Southeast Asia where the ranges are lowered.

While it can be a good indicator of the healthiness of your weight if you fall within certain statistical norms that were used to develop it, it should be taken with a significant grain of salt and should not be used as a substitute for a professional evaluation of your health by a doctor.

Center of Excellence

Provider Quality Designations

Insurance providers often require that a facility be approved as a "center of excellence" or meet specific quality designations in order to pay or approve services. Our staff can assist you in navigating the requirements and processes for preparing for coverage and payment of surgical weight loss.

In addition to our Level 1 accreditation by the American College of Surgeon's Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program, the following healthcare organizations have designated Lowell General Hospital's Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery as an approved center, recognizing the quality and care a bariatric patient will receive at Lowell General Hospital:

Aetna - Institutes of QualityAetna – Institutes of Quality®
Aetna makes information about the quality and cost of health care services available to its members to help them make informed decisions about their health care needs. In line with this goal, Aetna recognizes hospitals and facilities in its network that offer specialized clinical services for certain health conditions and consistently delivering evidence-based, safe care.

Blue Cross Blue Shield - Blue DistinctionBlue Cross Blue Shield – Blue Distinction®
Blue Distinction® is a designation given by Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies to hospitals that have demonstrated expertise in delivery quality healthcare. At the core of the Blue Distinction program are the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® facilities that are recognized for their distinguished care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery, and transplants.

OptumHealth - Center of ExcellenceOptumHealth – Center of Excellence
OptumHealth's Center of Excellence designation takes into consideration the services provided for patients beyond surgery and recognizes the support and after-care programming that is vital to successful outcomes.
