Lowell General Hospital Celebrates the Completion of 200,000 Square Foot Legacy Project

December 19, 2012 - Lowell, MA – Lowell General Hospital opened the new Hanson Family Emergency Department and Trauma Center at the main campus today on the first floor of the Dahod Building. Named for longtime hospital supporters Rick and Martha Hanson and their family, the new area helps Lowell General Hospital deliver on its promise to provide the highest quality emergency care to residents in the Merrimack Valley.

On Saturday, December 15, 2012, Lowell General Hospital welcomed trustees, donors, employees, community residents, and area first responders to an open house and dedication event. Attendees were thanked for their support by Normand Deschene, Lowell General Hospital President and CEO, Nathan MacDonald, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine, and Rick Hanson, Legacy Fund Steering Committee chairman. The dedication concluded with a celebratory ribbon cutting by Rick and Martha Hanson and tours for attendees of the new area.

"For many of our patients and their families, the Emergency Department is the front door into our hospital, and often their first impression of Lowell General Hospital and the care we provide," said Deschene. "We have gone to great lengths to ensure that this first impression is as welcoming and accessible as possible while exceeding patients' expectations."

The new Emergency Department and Trauma Center features:

Two new radiology suites
State-of-the-art CT scan
Two distinct trauma rooms
Six zones designated by level of care
Separate pediatric area
New triage and rapid medical evaluation zones
Enhanced ambulance bay with charging pods
Onsite helipad

"The new department was designed to provide a new approach to efficient and personalized emergency care for our patients," said Nathan MacDonald, MD, Chief of Emergency Services. "With fifty private treatment rooms, the new department is split into six distinct zones so that flow and efficiency can be enhanced for patients of allacuities and needs."

The Dahod building, a new 200,000 square foot facility, has been under construction since May 2010. Now completed, the building provides increased physical space for outpatient services; two new 30-bed inpatient medical surgical units featuring private rooms; additional surgical suites; a new Labor and Delivery unit; Emergency Department treatment areas that doubled in size; and the addition of an onsite helipad to support the hospital's Level III Trauma Center.
