Technology Changing the Patient Experience

Thanks to the newly installed Skylight Access ® Interactive Patient System at Lowell General Hospital, new parents are learning tips for newborn care, hospitalized teens are accessing the Internet (with parental approval), and patients and their visitors are watching Movies On Demand.

The hospital's new interactive network empowers patients by allowing them to easily request services from housekeeping and food services, learn about their medical condition and wellness with educational videos, play games to pass the time, or choose from a full line-up of premium TV channels. A retail option will soon be available for patients to purchase items from the gift shop for delivery to their room.

"We are creating unit-specific videos that will include patient room orientation, safety and discharge information, " says Ginny Rinne, RD, LDN, Manager of Patient Experience. "The hospital's nursing staff is helping to develop these videos, so that patients can better understand their illness, recovery process and home-care instructions. Providing this material for patients to review at their convenience enables the nursing staff to focus on clinical care and further explain information as needed."

Available throughout the hospital, this new technology is delivered bedside by 26" flat screen HD televisions.
