October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

How is Breast Cancer detected?

In many cases women have signs and symptoms of breast cancer. In early stage cases women may have no symptoms at all. This is why participating in yearly screenings is very important.

Symptoms to look for are:

  • breast or nipple pain
  • swelling of all or part of the breast
  • nipple retraction (turning inward)
  • skin irritation or dimpling
  • nipple discharge (other than breast milk)
  • redness, scaliness, or thickening of the breast skin or nipple

Importance of Mammograms

What is a mammogram? A Digital Mammogram is a x-ray of the breast. This screening tool is used to view the breast in several different ways and angles.

When should you be screened? Women over 40 years of age should be screened yearly.

Benefits of having a mammogram:

  • Mammograms can show that certain abnormalities are not worrisome.
  • Show that a lesion is more suspicious and a biopsy is needed
  • On the other hand it can also show in some cases that lesions are most likely benign ( not cancerous)
