Physical Therapy

Our Physical Therapy Department works with inpatients and outpatients with the goals of restoring function and mobility, decreasing pain and maximizing independence after an injury or illness. We are highly trained and licensed physical therapists and assistants, providing you with high-quality rehabilitative care.

Lowell General physical therapists treat patients of all ages. Our services are tailored for those who are experiencing difficulty due to conditions such as:

A physician's order is required for all physical therapy treatment.

We are conveniently located on the ground floor of the hospital, next to the MRI Center. There is reserved parking for physical therapy patients adjacent to the building.

Inpatient Physical Therapy

Inpatient physical therapy services are typically provided at bedside or on the unit. Some of the things we may work with you on are making certain you can get in and out of bed and climb stairs.

We help you achieve your highest level of functional independence prior to discharge home. When appropriate, we recommend home services or facilitate transfer to a rehabilitation setting or nursing home.

Outpatient Physical Therapy

Outpatient services are offered to children and adults and often focus on "fine-tuning" joint mobility issues, such as a knee or ankle.

We accept most insurance plans. Many insurance plans require a referral from a primary care physician. Please contact us if you have questions about insurance coverage.

Assessment

Your care begins with an in-depth assessment of your condition. Your licensed physical therapist works with you to develop a customized treatment program to achieve meaningful, practical and sustained changes in your functional mobility.

Treatment Program

We offer skilled physical therapy interventions including:

Therapeutic exercise
Functional training - mobility skills required for independence in every day living, May include the use of crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and orthotic/prosthetic devices as needed
Education to help you understand your condition, your treatment and how to care for yourself
Prescription and application of devices and equipment to aid or support you
Additional interventions to improve motion, promote healing and reduce pain may be used, such as:
- Manual therapy
- Electrotherapy
- Ultrasound
- Heat and cold modalities
- Hydrotherapy
- Traction
