The Emergency Department at Lowell General Hospital has Emergency Medicine and Surgical specialists available around-the-clock to care for patients experiencing serious acute illness and traumatic injuries.

If you have any of the following symptoms, dial 911, and seek medical attention immediately:

  • Chest pain
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe burns
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sudden slurred speech or an unsteady gait

For routine health matters and check-ups, patients should contact their primary care physician. Regular check-ups with a primary care physician are the best prescription for good health. When moments count, Lowell General Hospital's Emergency Department offers immediate care when you need it.

On average, our emergency department treats 45,000 patients every year. Qualified trauma surgeons and physicians, specially trained in critical care, clinical emergencies, cardiac methods and advanced cardiac support are available to provide the most comprehensive emergency care possible. We also have staff available in surgery, anesthesia, radiology, cardiology, internal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, neurology, and orthopedics, as well as other medical specialties.

Our 22-bed emergency department offers convenience, efficiency, and comfort. For optimum care, it includes rooms close to the nursing station for monitoring severely ill patients and a separate area of beds for Fast Track patients with more minor injuries and illnesses The department also includes specialized areas for cardiac care; ear, nose and throat disorders; orthopedic injuries and casting, mental health and an area for complete examinations. Additionally, state-of-the-art diagnostic services are available for assessment and diagnosis 24/7. A family area is provided for private discussion.

Patients requiring serious, highly specialized emergency care may be transported to our affiliate Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, via a MedFlight helicopter or in an Advanced Life Support Ambulance (ALS).
