President's Message
Summer 2008
Dear Friends,
There has never been a more exciting or inspiring time to be part of Lowell General Hospital, as a patient, employee or physician. A proud provider of quality healthcare in our region for more than 100 years, Lowell General is now experiencing growth, innovation and achievement at a pace that is unparalleled in our history.
The dynamic evolution we are experiencing offers our community the latest state-of-the-art technology, the most comprehensive medical teams and an expansion of services at both our main and satellite campuses, designed to make your healthcare experience the best it can be. I am proud to share our recent accomplishments with you - as we continue our journey to become one of the best community hospitals in America.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Making the most advanced surgical technology available for our patients close to home is a priority for Lowell General. With the addition of the daVinci® Robotic Surgical System to our surgical offerings, Lowell General became one of the first Massachusetts' hospitals outside of Boston to offer robotic-assisted, image-enhanced, minimally invasive surgery for delicate gynecological, urological procedures, including prostate. The daVinci System will enable our surgeons to perform complex, minimally invasive operations with finer control and accuracy than through traditional laparoscopy. By enhancing surgical capabilities, this robotic system helps to improve clinical outcomes; patients may experience reduced trauma to the body, reduced blood loss and need for transfusions, less post-operative pain and discomfort, less risk of infection and scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery and return to normal daily activities, vastly improving surgical experience and long-term outcomes.
The Heart and Vascular Center at Lowell General Hospital
We are pleased to announce the opening of our new 11,500 square-foot Heart and Vascular Center. This facility includes two leading-edge catheterization suites, featuring advanced imaging and telemetry equipment, with a third poised to open in the near future. Patients now have access to five private bays for pre- and post-procedure needs, and a family consulting room for easier communication and increased privacy. The sophisticated interventional equipment in our new Heart and Vascular Center provides faster, more advanced invasive diagnostics and treatment for cardiac, vascular and radiology patients, including those requiring emergency and non emergency angioplasty (as part of the MASSComm trial), pacemaker implantation, electrophysiology, and venous and cardiac ablation.
Advances in Diagnostic and Imaging Services
We are committed to offering the most contemporary imaging services, providing our patients with vital tools needed for early detection. Designated a Breast Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, we offer the most extensive Women's Imaging Services in the Merrimack Valley - including three new digital mammography suites at our main campus, with two more coming in September to our Women's Imaging Center in Chelmsford. In addition, our Lowell General Chelmsford campus is home to our new Digital Imaging Center, featuring the Philips Brilliance 40CT Scanner and Philips Achieva 1.5T XR MRI - which will also offer the latest in Breast MRI along with breast biopsy for the first time in the region - beginning in September.
Lowell General Hospital Named to Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals in 2008
We were really wired to be recognized in the July issues of Modern Healthcare and US News and World Report, among the 100 Most Wired hospitals in the country as part of the 2008 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study. Lowell General Hospital earned a spot in the Most Improved category for recent innovations - including a hospital-wide Electronic Medical Records system - enabling healthcare providers across the continuum of care to communicate more effectively, improving the level of care for our patients and our community. This nationwide annual study focuses on how hospitals use information technology for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues.
Continued Growth for the Future
We look forward to experiencing the continued growth today that allows us to build a comprehensive framework for healthcare excellence tomorrow. Improvements in facilities, technology, and clinical performance - across all areas of the hospital - enable us to meet and exceed national healthcare standards and provide the highest level of care both now and in the future.
