President's Message

Dear Friends,
At Lowell General Hospital, we are honored to be entrusted with the health of our community. From planning and developing a new Lowell General poised to meet the healthcare challenges of tomorrow to raising funds that give hope, comfort and support to area patients living with cancer - it is the motivation for all that we do. As we embark on the most extensive construction project in the history of our hospital, our goal is to provide a legacy of healthcare excellence that will transform the patient experience today and for generations to come.
Building a Lasting Healthcare Legacy for our Community
The excitement and enthusiasm was evident on May 18 when we shared a glimpse of what the new Lowell General Hospital would look like during our ceremonial groundbreaking event. Over the next several years, we will be re-creating our main campus in one of the most innovative projects in the history of the hospital. Our new six-story building, scheduled to begin construction this summer, will support the growing healthcare needs of our community by nearly doubling our capacity to handle emergency patients, allowing space for new technology and equipment, providing more convenient access to outpatient services and offering all private rooms designed to enhance your patient experience. As a hospital leader, I am proud to help build a lasting legacy of healthcare excellence that will sustain our community for generations to come.
Making TeamWalk for CancerCare a Success Together
An incredible outpouring of support from our community - and the heartwarming gift of sunshine - made this year's TeamWalk for CancerCare the best yet! With your support, TeamWalk broke all records, raising an amazing $716,450 to provide hope and help for local cancer patients and their families, including transportation to and from treatments, support groups and services, wigs, medication costs for those in need, and many health and wellness programs. I'd like to personally thank the 5,000 walkers, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who made this day possible, including our honorary chair people VB from Fox 25 News and Mrs. Massachusetts International, Jane Marshall, and our honorary patient spokesperson Beverly Siebert. Your dedication and caring is inspirational and could be life changing for a cancer patient in need.
Boston Business Journal Recognizes Lowell General as a Best Place to Work
I am proud and humbled to announce that Lowell General Hospital has been named among the best places to work in Massachusetts for the second time in a year! Recently, Lowell General was included on the prestigious Boston Business Journal's Best Places to Work list for 2010. Out of more than 450 companies which were nominated, only 60 were named to this impressive list - 20 small, 20 medium, and 20 large. Listed among the 20 large companies, Lowell General is ranked alongside some of the state's most influential employers. As a business leader, this recognition signifies that we are on the right track, creating a positive work environment using valuable employee feedback to fuel our culture of job satisfaction, empowerment and growth.
I feel privileged to work beside more than 470 physicians, 1800 staff members, 500 volunteers, and numerous board members, auxiliary members and donors, who serve our community and support our mission to put patients first in everything we do. They are the essential element that makes Lowell General Hospital an exceptional place to receive care and one of the best places to work in Massachusetts!
In good health,
Norm Deschene
President and CEO
