Star Performer, Deborah Bukala"She puts her whole heart into helping us learn, because she wants the new nurses to prosper," is how co-workers describe Debbie Bukala, our July Star Performer of the Month.

Debbie graduated from LGH School of Nursing in 1973, and has been an RN in the Operating Room for nine years. Debbie was picked by the leadership staff to train new employees, due to her enthusiasm and professionalism towards new employees. As "Preceptor", she trains new Operating Room nurses in Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) procedures, Gynecological (GYN) procedures, General Surgery, and Urological Surgery.

Co-worker Christie Palazzola, RN, says that Debbie demonstrates a "patients first" attitude every day. "Debbie always presents herself as caring, concerned, and committed to patient safety," she says. She said that when Debbie trained her, she told her to take care of the patients "how she would like to be taken care of".

Walter Szuksta, Clinical Manager of the Operating Room, describes Debbie as extremely accountable towards departmental objectives and the hospital's mission. She serves on the Nursing Council and is also the Service Leader for the Urology Department.

Debbie is known to share this same level of commitment to fellow employees. "She is the first to ask if anyone needs help, and the first to stay and help with a case if needed," says Christie.

Debbie has two children and lives in Lowell with her husband of 32 years, John. In her spare time she enjoys golf, quilting, sewing, and vacationing at the Balsams Resort in New Hampshire.
